Internal Linking in 2026–2027 remains one of the few SEO tools a site owner can control almost directly.

But the old approach of “add more links to the page you want to rank and funnel PageRank into it” is far too simplistic. Google still uses PageRank as one of its link analysis and ranking systems, but PageRank has long been part of a much more complex system, and its current formula and weighting factors are not publicly disclosed.

The SEO goal today is therefore not to mechanically “push link equity,” but to build a structure in which the target URL receives internal signals, clear context, proper Googlebot accessibility, and enough high-quality incoming connections.

Topical Articles Really Matter, But Not Just for PageRank

Google does not confirm a direct relationship of “article on the same topic → more PageRank passed.”

PageRank is primarily tied to the link graph, while topical relevance helps Google understand what the source and target pages are about, why they are connected, and where the URL fits within the site structure. Google’s current documentation explicitly recommends connecting important pages to other relevant pages and using clear, descriptive anchor text. That means an article about choosing a graphics card that naturally links to a page for a specific model performs several jobs at once: it creates a link relationship, passes an internal signal, and gives Google textual context for that connection.

A link to the same page from ten random articles on unrelated topics does not become stronger simply because there are ten of them.

How Much PageRank Does an Internal Link Pass in 2026–2027?

No one outside Google can provide an exact percentage today.

The widely repeated 0.85 damping factor from older SEO resources belongs to the classic mathematical PageRank model, not a publicly documented formula for modern Google Search. Saying that “one internal link passes 85% of the weight” is therefore incorrect because it presents a historical model as if it were the current algorithm. In theory, a link is part of how link signals are distributed between pages, but Google also considers many other systems, and the current implementation of PageRank has evolved substantially.

Google itself states in its current documentation that PageRank remains one of its core ranking systems, but it is only one part of the overall search system.

Does It Matter Which Page the Link Comes From?

Yes, it matters in practice, but there is no public table saying “a page with DR 70 passes 12%, while a page with 10,000 visits passes 8%.”

For internal linking, it makes sense to look for pages that already have strong incoming signals: pages linked to by external sites, actively crawled by search engines, located within a well-connected section, and not functioning as dead-end URLs. If such a page is also topically related to the target, it is one of the strongest candidates for an internal link. The simple logic is more useful than any calculator: do not create ten new weak pages just to link to the URL you want to strengthen; use the site’s existing strong nodes instead.

Google also says that links help determine page relevance and discover new URLs, while important pages should be accessible through internal links.

Should You Constantly Change the Link Anchor Text and title Attribute?

Yes, it is better to vary internal link anchor text periodically, especially when a large number of links from different articles point to the same target page.

You do not need a unique anchor for every link, but using the exact same phrase every time is not ideal either. A practical approach is to alternate the exact article title, a shortened version, different grammatical forms, topical phrases, and natural anchors integrated into the sentence. This helps avoid an overly templated pattern while also giving the search engine different contextual signals about the target page.

The title attribute does not need to change every time. For SEO, it is significantly less important than the visible anchor text and surrounding content. If the goal is to strengthen a specific internal page, the priority should be the anchor, link context, and topical relevance rather than the title attribute. For a series of publications, focus on varying the anchors, while title can be used where it genuinely helps the user understand what the link opens.

Does a Sitewide Link From the Menu or Footer Pass Weight to the Target Page?

A sitewide link does create an internal connection between pages, so it should not be dismissed as completely “useless for SEO.”

At the same time, the footer should not be turned into an artificial link-building system. John Mueller of Google previously explained separately that internal links in the header, footer, sidebar, and main content do not receive a publicly defined reduced weighting simply because of their location. At the same time, the text in the main content is especially important for understanding context. A sitewide link is therefore primarily useful for site architecture, navigation, and keeping an important URL consistently accessible.

If the goal is specifically to strengthen a particular page, I would not rely on the footer alone. It is much more sensible to support it with natural links from relevant content.

Where Should the Link Go: Beginning, Middle, or End of the Article?

There is no reliable Google rule saying that a link placed higher on the page passes more PageRank.

You cannot claim that a link in the first paragraph passes, for example, twice as much internal weight as a link placed after an H2. For search engines, the availability of the link, its anchor text, surrounding content, and the overall site structure matter more. From an SEO perspective, the location should therefore be chosen according to semantic logic, not coordinates on the page.

If it makes sense to send the reader to the target page immediately after explaining a term, put the link there. If the link becomes useful after a comparison or argument, place it there instead. A link at the end of an article can be a perfectly valid internal link, but if the URL naturally belongs earlier, there is no reason to move it downward just because of the myth of a “correct” link position.

Google separately recommends using clear anchor text and surrounding context for internal links rather than mechanically stuffing keywords.

Can You Place Multiple Links From One Article to the Same Target Page?

You can, when the content genuinely calls for it, but doing so to “multiply link weight” is not worthwhile.

Repeating the same URL five times in one article does not turn the source page into a stronger transmitter. In addition, repeatedly using identical anchors can look unnatural and reduce the quality of the text. If the link has already been introduced in a context where the user understands where it leads, a second instance is only justified when it appears in a different meaningful section. It is also worth noting that Google does not recommend excessive linking and explicitly advises against turning anchor text into a collection of keywords.

In other words, the model of “one article — ten identical commercial anchors pointing to one page” is far less sensible today than several natural connections distributed across relevant site content.

How to Actually Build Internal Link Equity to a Target Page

The most effective approach is to build a concentrated internal graph around the target page instead of creating a stream of dozens of links from arbitrary URLs.

First identify donor pages with strong incoming signals, then select the topically relevant ones and add natural links to the target URL. An even stronger approach is a cluster: several informational articles cover different subtopics, link to the main commercial or target page, and the target page can in turn link back to genuinely useful supporting content where appropriate. This creates more than a one-way “link equity transfer”; it establishes a clear topical structure. Category pages, hubs, or overview pages that collect links to key URLs within a section can also be useful.

Google explicitly recommends a logical site structure and links to important pages from relevant content.

What Else Can You Use Besides Standard Links From Articles?

There are several internal methods that can often have a greater impact than publishing large numbers of new articles.

  1. The first is to strengthen the target URL with links from older pages that already receive external links and search traffic.
  2. The second is to eliminate orphan pages and make sure every genuinely important URL has at least one solid internal connection.
  3. The third is to rebuild an overly deep architecture in which reaching the required page requires passing through several low-value levels.
  4. The fourth is to use categories, breadcrumbs, navigation blocks, and topical hubs wherever they genuinely help the user.
  5. The fifth is to use proper permanent redirects when removing old URLs, but only when the new page genuinely replaces the old one in meaning: Google confirms that permanent redirects can pass signals to new URLs during migrations.

Why PageRank Sculpting With Internal nofollow Is a Bad Strategy

Blocking some internal links with nofollow in an attempt to keep PageRank from “leaking” into unwanted pages is not a reliable way to redistribute internal weight.

It is much better to manage the architecture itself: do not add unnecessary links, do not create hundreds of URLs without independent value, do not multiply duplicate pages, and do not force users through chains of unnecessary intermediate URLs. In Google’s current documentation, nofollow is primarily treated as a way to qualify certain types of links, such as untrusted user-generated content or particular external links, rather than as a primary tool for internal PageRank optimization.

Moreover, hidden links and elements created primarily to manipulate search engines are explicitly considered undesirable practices.

HTML Living Standard Examples

The current standard is properly called the HTML Living Standard and is maintained by WHATWG. The official specification currently lists an update dated July 20, 2026. For current development, the correct reference is therefore the HTML Living Standard (WHATWG), 2026.

For ordinary internal linking, the clean and correct HTML Living Standard approach is a standard <a href="..."> element. There is no need to add rel="follow", rel="dofollow", or other SEO attributes: under the standard, rel on <a> is used to identify specific relationships, while a normal link without rel is already a complete hyperlink.

The title attribute is not required to pass link equity and does not replace the anchor text. The primary SEO signals here are the href itself, the visible link text, and the surrounding context. In the HTML specification, title serves an advisory purpose for the link.

  • noopener is a security feature. It does not add nofollow, affect the SEO value of an internal link, or prevent PageRank from being passed.
  • target="_blank" simply tells the browser to open the link in a new tab or window.

What I Would Do for a Target Page on a Real Website

For one priority URL, I would first map the internal donors and divide them into three groups: strong topical pages, strong pages with partially overlapping intent, and ordinary relevant content.

The first group would receive the primary contextual links, the second only where the relationship can be clearly explained to the user, and the third would be used to expand topical coverage without artificially repeating anchors.

After that, I would review the menu, categories, breadcrumbs, hubs, and orphan URLs, then separately identify which pages on the site receive external links and make sense as donors. This produces a much stronger result than the strategy of “create 50 articles and put a link to the money page in every one.”

Google currently places particular emphasis on useful, original content and logical site structure, while attempts to manipulate links for ranking purposes fall under its spam-fighting systems.

The Bottom Line on Internal Linking in 2026–2027

PageRank still exists in Google, and internal links still matter, but their modern effect cannot be measured as a fixed percentage.

Professional internal linking in 2026–2027 is therefore built around four things: the strength of the donor page, topical and search-intent alignment, clear link context, and logical site architecture. Sitewide links are useful for structure, but they should not be the only way to strengthen a URL. Topical articles matter not because “topical relevance increases PageRank,” but because they create a strong semantic and link cluster around the target page. And the link location — beginning, middle, end of an article, or footer — should primarily follow the logic of the document: Google provides no basis for assuming that a link in a specific position receives a fixed additional weighting factor.

Most importantly, instead of trying to calculate imaginary “link equity percentages,” manage the site’s actual graph: which pages function as nodes, which URLs receive the most internal connections, where external signals enter the site, and how naturally the entire system works for both users and search engines.
